What Are the Causes of Yeast Infections in Children? July 23, 2009

Yeast infections are caused by Candida, fungus species. Usually, these infections will heal, but people with weakened immune systems, and babies are more likely to suffer from recurring infections.
There are a number of causes which lead to yeast infections:
- One is increased use of antibiotics. This causes an imbalance of microbes in the body, which may result in Candida overgrowth.
- Another cause of yeast infection is related to children’s diet and nutrition. Many foods, and even formulas, contain a high amount of sugar. Sugary foods increase Candida growth, and the “sweet” imbalance may lead to infection.
- Yeast infections are also common in newborns. Yeast are naturally present in the vagina, therefore at birth, the infant comes in contact with it and may be infected.
- Furthermore, Candida grows in moist skin areas. Baby’s diaper rash may be worsened if infected.
- Also, let’s not forget the fact that little (and big…) kids love being and playing in water. Many times, they will stay in their wet bathing suits, even after coming out of the water. As mentioned, yeast “love” moist areas, therefore, a wet bathing suit on wet skin will be “perfect”…
- Children who suck on their thumb may also develop yeast infection on the skin around fingernail.
A common yeast infection is thrush, which is oral. It is seen as white, thick patches lying on a red base inside the mouth. But as mentioned, other body parts may be infected as well.
In healthy children and adults, the infection can be diagnosed with a simple exam of mouth or skin.
Oral thrush needs medication prescribed by a doctor. Diaper rashes or other skin yeast infections do not require prescriptions by doctors. Of course, if these infections worsen, a doctor should be consulted.

Are you trying to isolate the cause of yeast infection in your body? There are several reasons that may cause yeast infections in the body and they are-
- Antibiotics are the main cause of yeast infection in the body. Antibiotics are taken to kill of bacteria that cause infections in the body. But along with dangerous bacteria, the antibiotics also kill off good bacteria in the body too. These good bacteria are responsible for protecting the body against yeast infections. But antibiotics create an imbalance upsetting the vaginal and body ecosystem causing yeast infections.
- Another cause of yeast infection is tight nylon clothing. Tight clothing keeps moisture close to the body allowing the yeast to grow easily in the warm damp environment. Use unbleached cotton underwear and keep yourself clean and dry. A few doctors also recommend that you wash, dry, iron and then microwave your infected underwear to prevent reinfection. Although you should be a little careful as most underwear has elastic (rubber) in it and that could easily melt away.
- Women love to use perfumes and that is another common cause of yeast infection. Try to avoid all douches and perfumed products in the groin area to prevent upsetting the normal bacterial balance of the region.
- Wash your clothes with eco-friendly detergents that do not contain any fabric softener. Washing your underwear with these varieties of chemical free detergent just ensures that your groin area remains free of chemicals like fabric softener and nasty chemical perfumes that are retained on clothes even after washing!
Get a blood test to rule out diabetes and immune systems diseases like HIV to ensure that there are no underlying causes to the yeast infection. The best way to find out the cause of yeast infection is by getting a complete medical check carried out with a doctor.
